The UTMB Health Center in Livingston was initially located in a small building, and services were offered solely to high-risk maternity patients on a half-day per week basis.

On November 4, 1991, the UTMB Regional Maternal & Child Health Center, the Texas Department of Health (Region 4), and the Women, Infant, and Children Nutrition Program (WIC) celebrated the co-location of a new, large, completely renovated facility. Since then, services have expanded and are now available five days a week. Patients seen at the Polk County Regional Health Center can now receive the following services in one convenient trip to the center:

  • Prenatal care for both low- and high-risk patients
  • Family planning and gynecological services
  • Texas Health Steps (early and periodic childhood screening and developmental testing)
  • Dysplasia services
  • Cancer Stop program (breast and cervical cancer screening for women age 40 or over)
  • Immunizations
  • Screening for TB (tuberculosis/chest clinic)
  • Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases
  • Case management
  • On-site screening for Medicaid eligibility
  • Women, Infant, and Children Nutrition Services (WIC)

The Livingston clinic strives to create a special bond between the patient and the primary care provider. Pregnant women who have seen the same certified nurse midwife for care during their pregnancy may utilize that nurse midwife in delivering their child in a "birth center setting" at a local hospital. The nurse midwives and family practice physicians send high-risk prenatal patients to UTMB in Galveston.
