Reflection

Reflection is a critical element for professionalism.

We must reflect on our own behaviors, not simply assume "oh, I'm very professional." Try questions like these:

  • How did I behave in that difficult situation?
  • If I had it do over, would I do anything differently?
  • What aspect of professionalism was challenged for me today? (here again is a place for the usefulness of the CHARACTER acronym to break down this enormous construct into meaningful parts).

We must help our students learn to reflect, by asking them to do so. Try questions like these:

  • How do you think you did in that difficult situation?
  • If you had it do over, would you do anything differently?
  • What aspect of professionalism was challenged for you today? Once again, use the CHARACTER acronym - to help the student break down this enormous construct into meaningful parts.

To be 'professional' means to show CHARACTER(c):
