What is CurrMIT?

CurrMIT is an acronym that stands for Curriculum Management and Information Tool. It was developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges to allow each member institution to manage its own curriculum locally on a database containing common, defined data elements in use nationally. The database supports medical school curriculum managers in administering their programs; allows for comparisons of curricula between schools; and, over time, can be used to analyze trends in medical education in the U.S. and Canada.

More specifically, the database identifies information to foster networking about courses; tracks what teaching methods and materials are in use; specifies sites used for teaching and learning, contact hours devoted to specific topics, and assessment techniques used to determine whether predefined objectives are being met. It supports the efficient use of successful curriculum reform strategies by documenting and making available detailed information about ongoing reform and innovation.

What does CurrMIT mean to UTMB?

UTMB has participated in the CurrMIT project since the first online beta testing in the summer of 1998. Since then, various levels of information have been captured and archived within the database. At present, complete information on years one and two of the Medical School curriculum has been collected since the 2000-2001 academic year.  Unlike most participating schools, UTMB uses medical students to track this curriculum information.

These data are available to any UTMB faculty wishing to discover what topics have been presented in the curriculum. Custom reports are available by course, topic, teaching methods, assessment methods, site, session type, and more. Data are available not only for UTMB courses but also for other medical institutions that have submitted this information to CurrMIT.
