Fellows in Medical Education Program
Since 1995, OED has
hosted International Fellows in Medical Education. Many of these have
been selected and supported by the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical
Graduates/Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and
Research (ECFMG/FAIMER) International Fellowships in Medical Education
program. Others have been supported by the World Health Organization
(WHO) and similar national or international programs.
Fellows are in
residence from a few weeks to 18 months. Typically,
they stay for 6-12 months. Depending on their particular
circumstances, they are involved in medical education activities relevant to
their needs. All are included in OED’s Scholars in Education faculty
development program. Usually they also attend workshops, such as the
facilitator training workshops, and become a small group facilitator for one
or more IMC courses.
Hosting foreign
Fellows has had a positive influence on OED faculty and
staff as well as other medical educators on campus. The Fellows
bring a fresh perspective on the challenges of medical education around the
world, and often give us new ways of looking at our own work. Several
have published articles related to research or educational experiences
encountered during the Fellowships.
