SP Bibiliography

Since the first paper written about the "programmed patient" in the mid-1960's over 1500 papers have been published that deal with teaching or assessment using standardized patients. This bibliography lists many of these papers. The articles have been sorted into six sections by themes.

Section 1: Papers of historical interest, overviews of SP use, or discuss general information about assessment that include references to SPs

Section 2: Articles that deal with project or program evaluation where the SP is used to measure change, or SP measures are used to assess program or curriculum outcomes.

Section 3: SPs used in teaching exercises

Section 4: Objective Structured Clinical Examinations: including the development and logistics of exams and unique approaches to the application of OSCEs

Section 5: Measurement tools associated with SP use. Checklists and global scoring techniques and discussions of the psychometric properties of SP assessments

Section 6: Articles that discuss the influence of being an SP on the SP and articles that deal with special populations of patients (pediatric, adolescent etc)

The application of models, computer programs and computer based simulators has advanced rapidly over the past 10 years.   The following listing included many articles dealing with simulation in healthcare education that address these methods.

Section 7: Models and computers for simulation

While an attempt has been made at including as many papers as possible, your feedback would be greatly welcomed. If you have published articles dealing with standardized patients, or you are aware of articles that should be added to this list, please email the information and we will update the list.
