Galveston County Regional Collaborative

The Galveston Regional Collaborative consists of the following institutions: UTMB, Texas A & M at Galveston, Galveston College, Galveston Independent School District, and the College of the Mainland. These institutions all collaborate to provide 105 contact hours of professional development experiences for 25 K-12th grade teachers each year. The overall objective is to provide Galveston County science teachers with ongoing support systems of sustained and high intensity professional development to assist them in implementing the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), through upgrading their knowledge of content and pedagogy to engage ALL students with interesting, relevant, experiential, and meaningful science learning experiences. Activities include: Online virtual reality experience “Ocean Commotion” A one week summer institute focused on constructivist methods of teaching, inquiry-based learning, FOSS and GEMS kits for each grade level, equity in the classroom, assessment methods, etc Variety of marine biology related field trips and hands-on activities Teacher job shadowing program. Part of the Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science Teaching.

Program Structure

Teachers choose from the following activities to customize their own program to complete 105 contact hours.
  • One-week Space Science Summer Academy at UTMB
  • One-week summer Professional Development Academy focused on hands-on inquiry-based learning incorporating TEKS, use of technology in class, teacher professional development at UTMB in July)
  • Free attendance at one-day Annual Regional Science Teachers Conference held at UTMB in Galveston (September or October)
  • Hands-on, inquiry-based Teacher workshops during the academic school year held at UTMB
  • Web-based exercise on salt marshes and salt marsh tour (Texas A&M at Galveston)
  • Salt Marsh Virtual tour and classroom activities (Texas A&M at Galveston)
  • Adventures in Science Program (Texas A&M at Galveston)
  • Workshops at College of the Mainland
  • Attendance at CAPE consortium workshops in the summer
  • Inquiry-based Explorations in Physical and Life Sciences (June) at UTMB

How to Apply
