Office of Educational Outreach

Saturday Biomedical Science Academy
for 4th - 6th grade students

Academy Information

The Saturday Biomedical Science Academy is offered by Educational Outreach in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences in the School of Allied Health Sciences. The goal of this program is to provide students with an enrichment experience to:
  1. Provide access to a wealth of basic research and clinical science information through hands-on experiences in chemistry, physics, and biology
  2. Stimulate student interest and enhance scientific knowledge
  3. Learn how creative, fun, and relevant science can be to everyday life

It is particularly important to target this program to this age group since studies have shown that student interest in science, especially in girls, significantly diminishes during these years. Thus, it is critical to provide enrichment opportunities to inspire these students to consider pursuing future science-related careers.

Some activities include:
  • Building model jet engines
  • Exploring balloon rockets
  • Creating and flying loop airplanes
  • Constructing terrariums and terraqua columns

Eligibility

All students are eligible to apply for program participation that are currently enrolled in the 4th-6th grade in public and private schools.
