Friends of Old Red logo and pin. Using Nicholas J. Clayton’s 1889 drawing of the iconic circular window located on the third floor of Old Red, Virgilio Aguilar (a San Antonio based architect), created a logo for the Friends of Old Red.

The Friends of Old Red are dedicated to founding a new medical museum in Old Red/Ashbel Smith Building and preserving UTMB’s medical heritage collections. UTMB housed notable anatomical and pathological museums from the late-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century.

In 2008, Osler Scholars, Drs. Joan Richardson, Barbara Thompson, Judy Aronson and Dr. Howard Brody former Director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities brought the concept of founding a new museum in Old Red to life, by establishing a museum task force.

Since then, numerous consultants (including museum professionals, academics, architects, and conservators) and helped advance the museum. Today, an Advisory Council, and several Operational, Collections and Educational committee with members from the UTMB and local community meet regularly.
