About OLLI at UTMB

OLLI at UTMB

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute — OLLI at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health)— began in 2002 to provide a welcoming learning environment for those 50 and older who are interested learning for the joy of learning. With a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, OLLI at UTMB joined a nationwide network of lifelong learning institutes across the country, all devoted to best practices in lifelong learning.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes are found on the campuses of 122 colleges and universities from Maine to Hawaii and Alaska. Each provides a distinctive array of non-credit courses and activities specifically developed for its distinct audience. Each is an independently operated lifelong learning initiative of its host-college or university and is supported in part by the Bernard Osher Foundation.

The curriculum at OLLI at UTMB is designed by our members and reflects our broad interests, capitalizes on our unique regional and environmental resources, and utilizes local experts as faculty to enrich the lives of our entire community.

Our members

OLLI members come from various cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, education levels, and locations. Some are island natives, while others come from halfway around the globe. But they are united by their desire to learn.

Our faculty

As a part of the UTMB Health family, OLLI promotes the benefits staying active—both physically and mentally—have on the body as we age.  OLLI instructors include community experts as well as current and retired university professors and healthcare professionals. We also provide UTMB faculty and students opportunities to engage with our members, encouraging intergenerational understanding and building more caring and compassionate healthcare providers of the future.

The health and safety of our patients, their families, employees, and community are a priority to us. To help reduce the risk and spread of COVID-19, UTMB Health has revised its visitation policy.
