| Scientific research provides an opportunity
for creativity and discovery. It is an area that utilizes an individual's
ability to think in an organized manner. Increased numbers of scientists
are needed to fill the demands of the 21st century; the Committee for Diversity
in Graduate Education, at The University
of Texas Medical Branch, is dedicated to meeting this challenge. If
scientific research was diminished, there would be an end to the investigation
of serious problems such as HIV, cancer, nerve regeneration after spinal
cord injury and multiple sclerosis. Advancements in space exploration and
computer technology would also cease. It is therefore necessary that we
continue to market scientific research and to recruit talented individuals
who will give their time and energy to the pursuit of scientific excellence.
The Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium is sponsored by UTMB's Graduate
School of Biomedical Sciences, and hosted by its Committee for Diversity
in Graduate Education. This annual symposium provides students from
around the country with the opportunity to dialogue their research experiences;
present their findings in a formal setting to fellow students, faculty
and staff; and explore their interest in graduate education by touring
the University and interacting with faculty, staff and currently enrolled
students. This symposium provides an excellent opportunity for students
to learn more about UTMB's many graduate and summer programs, application
processes, assistantships and scholarships as well as the communities both
on and off campus.
