Galveston is located two miles off of the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, and is less than 50 miles from downtown Houston, TX. Galveston is a major city on a natural island. It is 30 miles long and from one to two miles wide. The island is bounded on the south by the Gulf of Mexico and is separated from the mainland by an arm of Galveston Bay. Three causeways and a ferry connect Galveston Island to the mainland. UTMB offers the unique advantages of a large, well-established and rapidly expanding medical center located directly on a seashore.

Galveston provides recreation for those who enjoy fishing, swimming, bicycling and other outdoor sports. There are several marinas. Stewart Beach at Sixth Street and Seawall Boulevard is a major beach park. Seawolf Park on Pelican Island has fishing piers and several World War II vessels open for tours. Further west, Galveston Island State Park offers beach front picnic areas, camping, nature trails and abundant bird watching. The Island's colorful history provides many attractions such as Victorian period homes and the Ashton Villa and Samuel May Williams house museums. The Strand area also provides tourists with many restaurants and gift shops. In addition to these attractions, there is a Strand Street Theatre and plenty of horse-drawn carriages that offer leisurely tours of the historic areas.
