Eduardo “Pep” Valdes serves as web director for UTMB Health Care. In that role, he manages the development, maintenance and marketing of UTMBhealthcare.org, the patient-oriented web site that supports the university’s clinical enterprise. Valdes joined the marketing team in summer 2008.

In the months since Hurricane Ike struck Galveston and scattered UTMB’s clinical services, UTMBhealthcare.org has become a critical link and communication tool between the university and its clinical customers. Pep’s primary charge is to make UTMB’s clinical web site meet and exceed the needs and expectations of the visitors, patients and clinicians it (and he) serves.

In his previous role at UTMB, he and colleagues were responsible for many of the university’s primary web sites and other electronic communication venues. His role included providing design, planning and hands-on support for a variety of major internal initiatives. He started his career as a writer and journalist, added desk-top publishing and print design experience to his skills, and began focusing on Internet development in 1996.

He has extensive experience in project design, implementation and management; written, visual and multimedia communication; concept and idea development; web site production and development; content management; issues and crisis management; targeted and broadcast promotion; and new media and new technologies, including web-based audio and video.

He’s been recognized with numerous publication and project awards, highlighted by the prestigious IABC Gold Quill Award. He served several terms by appointment on the statewide UT System Employee Advisory Council, and contributed to the work of UTMB’s Compensation Steering Committee, Institutional Handbook of Operating Policy Committee, Institutional Diversity Council, and others.

Pep moved to Galveston from the west coast of Florida, where he earned an English degree and specialized in business communication at the University of South Florida.
