Thomas Albrecht, Professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, is the Director of the OIC. Dr. Albrecht received his doctoral degree in 1973 from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Microbiology and Biochemistry. His dissertation was entitled “The Oncogenic Potential of Human Cytomegalovirus.” In 1974 he joined the Department of Tropical Public Health of Harvard University, where he was a Research Fellow under the guidance of Dr. Thomas H. Weller. At Harvard he studied the interactions of human herpesviruses with cultured cells of the central nervous system. He has more than thirty years of experience in studying the cellular changes elicited by infectious agents, particularly human herpesviruses, and toxic substances.
