Tomoko Makishima, MD, PhD graduated
from Kyushu University School of Medicine, Fukuoka, Japan, where she also obtained
a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences. She completed
residency in Otorhinolaryngology at Kyushu University School of Medicine, Department
of Otorhinolaryngology, Fukuoka, Japan. She did a postdoctoral
fellowship at the NIDCD, National Institutes of Health, working on both
clinical and basic research projects on Genetic hearing loss.
Dr. Makishima's clinical

hearing loss, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and vertigo.
Her
current research
interest is to determine the molecular mechanism of Genetic hearing loss and
vestibular dysfunction. This is being pursued by using transgenic and knockout
mouse models of inner ear dysfunction. Recent research projects include autosomal
dominant hearing loss (DFNA36, DFNA10), autosomal recessive hearing
loss (DFNB7/11), mitochondrial mutations, Turner Syndrome, Fanconi
Anemia, Deafness in Caspase-3 knockout mice, and Auditory characterization
of Coch knockout mice.
