Byron J. Bailey, M.D., FACS

Dr. Bailey is
a graduate of the University of Oklahoma (B.A.) and the Oklahoma
University School of Medicine (M.D.). He trained in Head and Neck
Surgery at UCLA, where he remained on the faculty and organized
a new training program at the L.A. County Harbor General Hospital.
Since coming to UTMB in 1968, Dr. Bailey has been active in teaching,
patient care and research, and served as Chairman of the Department
of Otolaryngology 1968-2003. He was appointed Chair Emeritus in 2004.
He has served as the President of the
Society of University Otolaryngologists, the Association of Academic
Departments of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American
Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Society
of Head and Neck Surgery, the American Laryngological Association,
and American Board of Otolaryngology.
He has been
the Editor of the American Medical Association's Archives of
Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for twelve years, and edited
the Yearbook of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for
10 years. He was Editor of the Laryngoscope through August 2003. He
received a Presidential Citation from Dr. Eugene N. Myers at the
American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1995
for his contributions to the field.
The Triological Society Gold Medal was presented to Byron J. Bailey, MD, at the Triological Society Annual Meeting on May 14, 2001. The inscriptions reads "Outstanding otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon, author, editor, teacher, and humanitarian for his superb leadership in our specialty."
