JUNIOR MEDICAL STUDENT  CURRICULUM: OBJECTIVES


Terminal Objectives for the Junior Medical Student Course in Otolaryngology

When the student completes this course he/she will be able to:
  1. Discuss the applied anatomy of the ear, nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx and neck
  2. Know the essential components of a basic head and neck review of systems and physical examination
  3. Diagnose and treat common infections such as acute sinusitis, acute pharyngitis, and acute otitis media
  4. List the most common causes of epistaxis
  5. List the common causes of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction
  6. List the causes of stridor and be familiar with emergency airway management techniques
  7. Explain the pathophysiology and importance of referred otalgia
  8. Recognize and describe abnormal exam findings of the oral cavity and the pharynx including malignant lesions and lesions resembling malignancy.
  9. Recognize common ear, nose and throat diseases of childhood including tonsil and adenoid disorders
  10. Describe the clinical aspects and form differential diagnoses for sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo
  11. Perform primary assessment and emergency management of patients with craniofacial trauma
  12. Describe common benign laryngeal problems in children and adults
  13. Describe the clinical features of branchial cleft cysts and thyroglossal duct cysts
  14. Provide a differential diagnosis for a patient with a neck mass
  15. Describe the diagnostic workup and treatment options of a patient with head and neck cancer
  16. Recall the TNM staging of oral cavity and oropharyngeal tumors
  17. Recall the clinical features of the most common diseases of the thyroid gland
  18. Recall the clinical features of the most common diseases of the salivary glands
  19. Explain the basic aesthetic principles of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery
  20. List some of the options for reconstructing major head and neck defects resulting from trauma, congenital anomalies or cancer resections

Enabling Objectives for Junior Medical Students in Otolaryngology

The student should:

  1. Attend all 10 lectures and sign in
  2. Read the handouts from the 10 lecturers that are compiled as a syllabus

  4. Purchase one textbook of Otolaryngology (optional, so students can choose which book they prefer)
  5. Complete the midterm evaluation form
  6. Take the final exam which consists of 50 multiple choice questions (5 from each lecture)
  7. Complete the evaluation of the course (helps us to determine if the objectives of the course are met)

NOTE: The student should also know how to access information about the specialty of Otolaryngology and how it relates to other medical disciplines after completing this course.
