Dr. Newlands graduated with
highest honors from the University of California in Santa
Barbara with an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry – Molecular
Biology. He received a Masters degree in Chemistry from the same institution. Dr.
Newlands attended medical and graduate school at UTMB and
was one of the first graduates from the combined MD-PhD program here with a
PhD in Neuroscience. He continued his clinical training with an internship
in General Surgery at Virginia-Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington followed
by a residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Washington in Seattle. After
one year on faculty at the University of Washington,
Dr. Newlands served on the faculty of the division of Otolaryngology at the
University of Mississippi Medical Center for three years. He joined
our Department in 1999. He received his Masters in Business Administration
from The University of Texas in Austin in
2002. He was named Department Chairman in September, 2003.
Dr. Newlands clinical interests include head and
neck oncologic surgery and reconstruction, sinus
surgery, and anterior cranial base surgery. His research interest
is in vestibular anatomy and physiology, recovery from vestibular injury,
vestibular control of head unrestrained gaze. His
research is currently funded by the NIDCD.
