Three residents graduating from the UTMB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences residency program have captured top fellowships at distinguished medical centers around the U.S.

Department Chairman Bernard Godley said, “These fellowship opportunities are the launching pad for successful careers in academia or a subspecialty practice. It speaks to the talent of our residents as well as the strength of our residency program.”

INCOMING RESIDENTS COME FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

The innovative, comprehensive residency training program at the UTMB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has drawn top candidates from around the globe.

Under the leadership of Dr. Brian R. Wong, residency program director, and Dr. John Davis, associate program director, the program has been revitalized and strengthened.

Wong said, “We’ve created a well-rounded program that gives our graduates outstanding capabilities in research, clinic, surgery and leadership that makes them successful.

“We now attract the highest-quality applicants in terms of honors, accolades, board scores and schools,” he added.

LASIK, INTRAOCULAR LENS IMPLANT TREATMENTS AVAILABLE THROUGH UTMB EYE CENTER

A UTMB University Eye Center faculty member made history in March when he implanted the first toric intraocular lens at UMTB. Dr. Manuj Kapur performed the surgery to implant the lens that is specially designed to correct astigmatism in a procedure that also removes cataracts.

Both Dr. Kapur and Dr. Oday Alsheikh, another eye center faculty member, also perform LASIK, a service available to patients through the Friendswood Eye Center.

Dr. Kapur is trained in all aspects of cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery. He has particular interests in LASIK and PRK treatment of refractive errors. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Cornea Society. He is certified on the Visx laser and in the use of refractive intraocular lenses.

Dr. Alsheikh's subspecialty focus is cornea and external diseases and refractive surgery. He treats both pediatric and adult corneal patients, with a wide range of surgical techniques including full thickness and lamellar corneal transplantation, DSEK, corneal surface reconstruction, excision of conjunctival surface tumors, and pterygium removal.

 

Dr. Alsheikh has a special interest in complex cataracts and is certified for INTACS in treating early keratoconus and refractive errors. He is also a certified LASIK surgeon. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, ASCRS, and is a fellow in the Cornea Society.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM AWARDED MAJOR GRANTS

Global corporations Alcon and Allergan each donated $25,000 to the UTMB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences residency training program after Hurricane Ike.

Alcon is a worldwide leader in pharmaceuticals for the eye and world's second largest manufacturer of consumer vision care products. Allergan is a global, multi-specialty health care company pursuing therapeutic advances, including the treatment of eye conditions.

Dr. Erik van Kuijk, department vice chairman for clinical services, said, “This speaks to the belief that these global pharmaceutical companies have in the vibrancy of our program and the role we play in training ophthalmologists.”

DOCTORS JOIN UTMB OPHTHALMOLOGY AND VISUAL SCIENCES

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Oday Alsheikh, Dr. John Davis, Dr. Manuj Kapur and Dr. Gibran Khurshid in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

Drs. Alsheikh, Davis, Kapur and Khurshid are scheduling patient appointments through the University Eye Center, Galveston location at 409-747-5800 and the University Eye Center, Friendswood location at 281-996-7564. The 24 hour access number is 409-772-2222.

Dr. Alsheikh's subspecialty focus is cornea and external diseases and refractive surgery.

Dr. Alsheikh received his medical degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He finished a transitional internship at St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, Texas, followed by residency at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland Oregon. He then did a fellowship with Drs. Stuart Brown and David Schanzlin at the University of California, San Diego.  Dr. Alsheikh treats both pediatric and adult corneal patients, with a wide range of surgical techniques including full thickness and lamellar corneal transplantation, DSEK, corneal surface reconstruction, excision of conjunctival surface tumors, and pterygium removal.

Dr. Davis

Dr. Davis's subspecialty focus is in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus.

Dr. Davis received his medical degree at the Duke University School of Medicine. He completed a medical internship at Baylor Affiliated Hospitals, followed by an ophthalmology residency at the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor in Houston. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus, also through the Cullen Eye Institute.

Prior to joining UTMB, Dr. Davis was in private clinical practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He previously held an academic position at the Medical college of Georgia, and before that, practiced in Saudi Arabia at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital.

Dr. Davis is interested in all aspects of pediatric ophthalmology. He has particular interests in glaucoma, cataracts, and strabismus (eye alignment disorders) affecting children. He also has a subspecialty focus in complex strabismus problems affecting adults.

Dr. Davis is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, for which he is also an Associate Board Examiner. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

Dr. Kapur's subspecialty focus is in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery, and uveitis. 

Dr. Kapur received his medical degree at Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine. He completed a medical internship and ophthalmology residency at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He then completed a fellowship in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery, and uveitis at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Dr. Kapur is trained in all aspects of cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery. He has particular interests in LASIK and PRK treatment of refractive errors. Dr Kapur is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Catarct and Refractive Surgery and the Cornea Society. He is certified on the Visx laser and in the use of refractive intraocular lenses.

Dr. Khurshid

Dr. Khurshid's subspeciality focus is in anterior segment reconstruction, vitreoretinal diseases and adult ocular oncology.

Dr. Khurshid earned his medical degree at King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan. After graduation he completed his ophthalmology residency in Republic of Ireland. During his residency he achieved his Ophthalmology fellowship (FRCS) from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK and Master of Medical Sciences (MMS) in Ophthalmology from National University of Ireland.  During residency his main clinical research areas were reconstruction of the anterior segment of the eye especially after trauma and pediatric aphakia. Dr. Khurshid also completed vitreoretinal and ocular oncology fellowships at Royal Liverpool Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Prior to joining UTMB, Dr. Khurshid was in clinical practice at the Unit of Ophthalmology, University of Liverpool, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool, UK as consultant ophthalmologist in vitreoretinal surgery and adult ocular oncology. He was actively involved in teaching at graduate and postgraduate levels.  His expertise in the areas of advanced surgical managements of age related macular degeneration includes macular translocation surgery, retinal pigmentary epithelium patch grafting and complex sub-retinal surgery.  His ocular oncology skills include brachytherapy, proton beam radiotherapy, phototherapy, trans-scleral and trans-retinal resection of intraocular tumors.

He has pioneered key surgical procedures to salvage an eye with complex retinal and cancer disorders and has published in peer reviewed scientific journals and presented in many international meetings.
