Research facilities for the UTMB Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Department

Laboratory space for our department is located on the 4th floor of the newly renovated research support building and in Clay Hall across from this building. The total laboratory space dedicated to ophthalmology researchers is more than 4,000 square feet.

The departmental research space is highly complemented and integrated with the research space that has been dedicated to the Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBME). CBME has more than 5,000 square feet in Building 21 adjacent to that of our department.

CBME has laboratories shared with the department that are dedicated to OCT, scanning laser ophthalmoscope and fundus imaging systems for small animal studies, multi-photon and confocal microscopy, Coherent Antistoke Raman (CARS) and fluorescence lifetime imaging systems and super resolution microscopy, as well as high-resolution ultrasound imaging, micro-PET-CT-SPEC and IIVS molecular optical imaging system for whole body small animal imaging.

The Animal Resources Center (ARC) provides pathogen-free rooms on the first floor of Building 21. All ARC facilities are AAALAC accredited. OVS investigators have dedicated rooms for animal housing and breeding. Animal surgical rooms, cell culture facilities and laboratories for tissue processing and histopathology also are available to our faculty within CBME.

The wet bench laboratories are fully equipped with state-of-art instruments to perform routine molecular and cell biology experiments, such as DNA and protein analyses, quantitative PCR, micro-dissection, infrared fluorescence imaging, light and electron microscopy, and in vitro and in vivo gene transfer.

The departmental laboratories provide resources for cell culture, molecular biology, protein chemistry and gene transfection. The cell culture facility contains the following:

  • Two Forma Class A/B3 biological safety cabinets for cell culture
  • A double port INVIVO2 1000 hypoxia workstation
  • Two Forma cell culture incubators and one Olympus inverted microscope
  • An ultra centrifuge
  • Two 13-foot -85 ultra cold freezers
  • A -20°C freezer
  • Two refrigerators
  • Two real-time PCR thermocyclers (iCycler)
  • ELISA reader
  • Western blotting apparatus
  • Typhoon 9410 variable mode phosphorimager
  • Nikon fluorescence microscope
  • A double beam UV-VIS spectrophotometer

Our faculty members have offices either in the UTMB Health Eye Center or Building 21, with sufficient desk surface and filing cabinets. There are two shared offices of 350 square feet each for the seven post-docs and visiting scientists and a 350-square-foot room with cubicles for research fellows and graduate students. The technicians have dedicated desk space in the laboratory. The PIs, post-docs, technicians and students have full access to more than 20 core facilities at UTMB, including:

  • Proteomics Center
  • Recombinant DNA Lab and Genomics Core Facility
  • Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Laboratory with two state-of-the-art FACsCalibur cell sorters
  • Bioinformatics Center
  • Electron Microscopy Core
  • DNA and Protein sequencers, cell sorters, mass spectrometers, etc.
