Working on the leading edge of technology, under the direction of Dr. Motamedi, researchers at the Center for Biomedical Engineering are exploring new and better ways to diagnose and treat eye diseases like retinopathy and macular degeneration.

The multidisciplinary imaging team uses state-of-the-art imaging technology to conduct preclinical and translational research. Currently the team is focused on the development of a multi-modal imaging platform for high-resolution cellular and molecular imaging of the retina.

Dr. Motamedi's work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense to develop a new imaging instrument and techniques for high-resolution and molecular imaging of the retina. He is using nanoparticles for the development of an imaging agent for targeted imaging of inflammation in ocular tissue. Dr. Vainrub, another member of the department, is collaborating with Dr. Motamedi on the development of a nanoimaging technique for the study of retinal diseases.

According to Dr. Motamedi, "One exciting area of development is adaptive optics and its applications for ophthalmic imaging where the researchers are applying technology developed by astronomers to look at the stars to examine individual photo receptors in the back of the eye to evaluate disease progression."
