How many residents are in each class?
We accept four positions into each year of residency.
Is there orientation during the first year?
Yes. During the first week of orientation you will complete Graduate Medical Education modules for EPIC, Compliance and Benefits. You will begin call by shadowing residents on your first day of employment. The second and third weeks are involved with sub-specialty modules, standardized patients and understanding the diverse procedures and opportunities we have in our ophthalmology clinic. You will become familiar with your rotations to which you are assigned and get to know the clinics, surgery, ER and other facilities on campus.

How much call do residents take?
At-home call (or pager call) approved by the Graduate Medical Education Committee:
- The frequency of at-home call is not subject to the every-third-night, or 24+6 limitation. However, at-home call must not be so frequent as to preclude rest and reasonable personal time for each resident.
- Residents taking at-home call must be provided with one day in seven completely free from all educational and clinical responsibilities, averaged over a four-week period.
- When residents are called into the hospital from home, the hours residents spend in-house are counted toward the 80-hour limit.
Is there a library?
Yes. There is an on-site library within the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences on the second floor for residents, faculty and staff. Moody Medical Library on the UTMB campus is available for further research. UTMB also provides online access to the Moody Medical Library, with PubMed and other databases available by remote login.
Are there office accommodations?
Yes. There is a Residents' Office which has workstations and desktop computers for individual use. Digital cameras are assigned to residents to assist with their training.
Is parking available at UTMB?
Yes. Parking is provided at a discounted rate for residents throughout the UTMB campus. Free parking is available at the OVS building.
