Fire Safety

Preventing fires and knowing what to do in case of a fire is the responsibility of all hospital
 caregivers. You need to be prepared to do your part.
  1. To report a fire: pull the nearest alarm station and call extension 21211.
  2. Locate the fire evacuation route in your area.
  3. Locate the fire extinguishers. Attempt to use the extinguisher only if you have been trained.
  4. Never use the elevators in your building during a fire.
  5. The hospital operator announces the fire location "Dr. Red. Child Health Center, 4S, Rm 421."

NOTE: If someone knows of a person still in the building they should inform Fire Department Personnel of the last known location of the individual. For no reason should anyone attempt to re-enter the building.

R

Rescue Attempt to rescue the patient and close the door behind you.

A

Alarm Turn in the alarm by activating the alarm pull station and dial ext. 21211.

C

Confine the smoke and fire by closing the doors to all patient and non-patient areas.

E

Extinguish the fire only if you have been trained in the proper use of a portable fire extinguisher. If you cannot handle the situation, close the door to the fire room and begin to Evacuate patients closest to the immediate area.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4.  What should be my first response in the event of a fire?

 6.  Who makes the decision to evacuate patients? In an immediate hazard, the unit's nursing director/designees makes decision. When time permits, the unit's nursing director/designee and the Galveston Fire Department make the decision.

 

7.  If an evacuation is necessary, how should you proceed? Horizontally through smoke doors, waiting for further instructions from the nursing director/designee or the Galveston Fire Department. If the horizontal evacuation is not available, use vertical evacuation; evacuate patients down minimum of two floors waiting for further instructions from the nursing director/designee or the Galveston Fire Department.
