The Division of Molecular Diagnostics

Welcome to the Molecular Diagnostics Division web page. The Division of Molecular Diagnostics provides timely and accurate assays for nucleic acid targets found in settings of infectious diseases, genetics/pharmacogenetics, and cancer. The Division is staffed with 6 core FTEs who perform approximately 20,000 tests annually. We are open Monday-Friday, 7 am-5 pm.

The Molecular Diagnostics Division uses a variety of nucleic acid assays including a range of extraction methods, qualitative and quantitative PCR, sequencing, membrane and fluorescent in situ hybridization, branched DNA, hybrid capture, and eSensor microarray. Our test menu is listed below with more information in the Lab Survival Guide: http://www.utmb.edu/lsg/. Additional tests are continuously evaluated to bring in house and input from clinical providers is welcome.

Available Tests:

  • BK DNA viral load (quantitation)
  • BRAF mutation
  • F5, F2, MTHFR mutations (by UTMB Antiphospholipid Standardization Laboratory)
  • Hepatitis C virus genotype and subtype
  • Hepattitis C virus detection by PCR
  • Hepatitis C viral load (quantitation)
  • HER2 (ERBB2) FISH
  • High Risk HPV
  • Human immunodeficiency virus genotype and virtual phenotype
  • Human immunodeficiency virus viral load (quantitative)
  • Inosine triphosphatase (ITPA) gene, SNPs
  • KRAS mutation
  • Warfarin sensitivity, VKORC1 & CYP2C9 SNPs

The Division of Molecular Diagnostics serves as a rotation/elective site for medical technologists, medical students, residents, and fellows to become familiar with fundamentals of molecular biology in clinical diagnostics. Trainees gain experience with laboratory activities including selection of tests and methods, processing and analysis of various types of specimens, and interpretation and reporting of test results.
