Research Interests

In collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia and supported by a grant from the Office of Naval Research, our study titled "Decision assist and closed loop resuscitation of hemorrhage in humans" is testing emerging new monitoring technologies for combat casualty care in volunteers undergoing a 10 mL/kg controlled hemorrhage. Fluid therapy remains the cornerstone in treating hypovolemia, but direct endpoints of intravascular volume are infrequently and non-systematically used to guide volume resuscitation. More precise fluid management in combat casualty patients is needed so that the clinical sequelae of hypovolemia and hypervolemia from under and over resuscitation can be reduced. Our study will contribute to the advancement in development of autonomous care system for fluid therapy into the clinical aim and validate the proof of concept that better decision tools can achieve target blood pressure and normovolemia while logistically reducing volume needs in humans undergoing hemorrhage.
