The UTMB Department of Pathology Ranks Sixth Nationally in NIH Funding
The NIH has recently announced that the UTMB School of Medicine received 250 research awards last year (http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/award/trends/medschc.htm), the most research awards in UTMB’s history. The total dollar value of the NIH awards was $104,312,000 – more than UTMB’s School of Medicine has received in any year except 2003. That year the total was $202,864,000, a sum which also included a one-time $110 million award to build the Galveston National Laboratory. As described in the NIH web site, UTMB’s School of Medicine ranked 39th in the nation in NIH funding in 2004 – its best ranking any year with the exception of 2003. This is seen in the figure below showing the total funding to UTMB over the past 9 years as well as our ranking relative to other Schools of Medicine nationally (the figure includes the one-time award for the GNL in 2003 shown by the gray bar).
In addition to the excellent progress made by UTMB and the School of Medicine in its NIH grant support, individual departments have also shown remarkable progress. Last year the following departments were ranked in the top 25 of the 123 medical schools nationwide:
| DEPARTMENT | RANK |
|---|---|
| Neuroscience & Cell Biology | 4 |
| Pathology | 6 |
| Obstetrics & Gynecology | 9 |
| Pediatrics | 12 |
| Surgery | 12 |
| Biochemistry | 14 |
| Otolaryngology | 16 |
| Microbiology & Immunology | 17 |
| Family Medicine | 18 |
| Anesthesiology | 21 |
(Note, because of the way NIH attributes grant awards to departments, these departmental rankings have been corrected from the NIH list to reflect the actual departmental affiliation of the PI's receiving these awards and the rankings that would result based upon the NIH list of other medical school departments.)
Congratulations to the departments and centers and our investigators for continued excellence!
