Preceptorships in Pathology
The Department of Pathology offers a variety of preceptorship opportunities for UTMB medical students between their 1st and 2nd years of medical school. The student will be exposed to the practice of pathology under the supervision of a UTMB faculty pathologist.
Laboratories/Divisions participating:
- Autopsy Service
- Medical Examiner’s Office (Texas City)
- Cytopathology
- Surgical Pathology
- Clinical Chemistry
- Clinical Microbiology
Some of the things you may do:
- Observe and assist in Autopsy and Surgical Pathology dissections
- Review and interpret microscopic slides
- Review the patient’s clinical record and correlate this with the autopsy findings
- Participate in “brain cutting” conference
- Learn how to correctly complete Death Certificates
- Observe fine needle aspirations of peripheral lesions performed by pathologists and CT- guided aspirations performed by radiologists
- Interpret smears and other cytological preparations from body fluids
- Attend a wide variety of Interdisciplinary conferences such as Tumor Board, Surgery Morbidity & Mortality conference, Infectious Disease conference, GI and Liver Pathology conference, etc.
- Learn about the Laboratory Information System and how instruments in the Clinical Laboratories interface with the hospital information systems.
