Pathobiology
The Pathobiology group within Experimental Pathology consists of faculty with interests in the mechanisms of disease. The diverse areas of pathology in this group include Analytical Chemistry, Cardiac Pathology, Comparative Pathology, Immunology, Inflammation, Neoplasia, Neuropathology, and Renal Pathology. Specific areas of research include pathologic alterations in the blood-brain-barrier (Campbell), infectious and toxicologic diseases in dolphins (Cowan), alterations in intracellular cations balance in disease (Okorodudu), immunopathology of renal glomerular injury (Rajaraman), the inflammatory response to smoke inhalation (Hawkins), immune tolerance (Vaidya), and tumor markers. These investigators use a wide variety of techniques and animal models to study diseases, including morphologic, biochemical, and molecular biology methods, often combining techniques to broaden their approach. Many of these investigators also have clinical responsibilities within the Department of Pathology, and directly relate their research to their clinical activities.
