Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Introduction
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has been training physicians since 1891, maintaining a long-standing commitment to excellence in graduate medical education. Modern and forward-looking, the residency program in pathology offers the trainee some of the finest facilities available in the nation. Fully accredited by the ACGME, the program is funded for a 4-year course of study that leads to qualification for certification by the American Board of Pathology (ABP). (Residents currently in the program are supported for their "credentialing" year, if required by the American Board of Pathology. This requirement was eliminated for residents starting training July 2002 and later.) The combined course in anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP) covers completely the broad spectrum of knowledge required for the practice of modern pathology. The majority of the training facilities of the program are housed within a large and comprehensive medical center. Our program is well coordinated, providing a highly integrated learning experience while avoiding redundancy. There is flexibility in the program to allow the resident to spend substantial time blocks in subspecialty areas of their choosing. A straight anatomic pathology track is also available for physicans committed to an academic career. For residents who desire exposure to research and potential preparation for academic careers, the Department of Pathology has more than 35 faculty members engaged in basic research projects. In fact, our Department ranks 6th in the Nation in NIH-funded research and 1st in the state of Texas. The Department of Pathology is the home of the Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases and an integral part of the Centennial Center for Environmental Toxicology. With a strong vision for the future, and drawing on some of the finest hospital and research facilities available, our training program enjoys excellent support from an institution that has been training doctors for over a century. We invite you to visit our campus; the learning opportunities available in Galveston, Texas will impress you.
