Hematopathology

The Division of Hematopathology at UTMB is a large multifaceted division providing a wide range of clinical hematology laboratory services, including major sections of morphology, automation, coagulation, hemoglobin electrophoresis, flow cytometry, and special hematology.  The division is staffed by about 30 medical technologists and 2 board-certified hematopathologists with experience and expertise in all aspects of hamatopathology.  Services include bone marrow pathology (morphology, immunohistochemistry, cytochemistry), peripheral blood and body fluid cell counts & morphology,  hemoglobin analysis (gel electrophoresis, HPLC, hemoglobin A1C),  multiparameter flow cytometry (immunophenotyping & DNA ploidy/cell cycle analysis), automated CBC and differential count, automated reticulocyte counting, global automated coagulation services (PT, PTT, thrombin time, fibrinogen, d-dimer, DRVVT, AT-III, protein C, protein S, platelet aggregation, bleeding time, factor assay, APCR, anti-Xa heparin assay, factor VIII inhibitor Bethesda unit assay, etc.),  osmotic fragility, sucrose/acid hemolysis, and G6PD screening.  In conjunction with the Divisions of Cytogenetics and Molecular Diagnostics, the Division of Hematopathology can provide a full range of bone marrow pathology services including cytogenetic and PCR-based genetic analysis of leukemia and lymphoma.
