Virus Disease

My research has focused on the pathogenesis and epidemiology of the viral hemorrhagic fevers and other emerging viral infections. At UTMB I have concentrated on the contributions of basic virology, immunology and structural biology to this field. Most of the current work in the laboratory deals with Bunyaviridae (phleboviruses such as Rift Valley fever), Arenaviridae (Lassa fever, South American hemorrhagic fevers) and SARS CoV.

I am working on the phylogeny of phleboviruses, reassortment of their tripartite genomes and their pathogenecity. The most important Phlebovirus is Rift Valley fever virus and there is an active program of human and animal vaccine development for this agent using reverse genetics. Ilya Frolov and I are developing alphavirus replicon vectored Rift Valley fever vaccines for use in livestock and later humans. Arenavirus research concentrates on the effects of infection on cellular function, particularly those molecular interactions related to vascular permeability. SARS-CoV work includes antiviral drug development, model characterization, and interferon interactions.

There is a BLS-4 laboratory recently opened to allow UTMB scientists to work safely with any agent. We will transition some of the other projects to higher hazard viral hemorrhagic fevers and develop projects on other viruses such as tick-borne flaviviruses, highly virulent avian influenza strains, and Nipah virus, a new, highly virulent paramyxovirus.
