The University of Texas Medical Branch is located on a semi-tropical island, two miles off the Texas coast and about 45 miles south of Houston. The campus is several blocks from the Gulf of Mexico.

A wide variety of housing opportunities are available, including historic homes within walking distance of the university, lovely waterfront homes on the island’s gulf and bay sides, and modern elegant homes in the new suburbs that have developed between Houston and Galveston.

UTMB has exceptionally collegial and talented faculty and a diverse and enthusiastic student body. Our residency program accepts 12 Pediatric and 4 Internal Medicine-Pediatric residents yearly.

UTMB offers a highly competitive compensation package and an outstanding work environment.

Old Red has played a vital role in the history of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston since the school began serving the health of Texas more than a century ago. Officially known as the Ashbel Smith Building, but affectionately called “Old Red” by UTMB students, faculty, staff and alumni, the structure today serves as a grand reminder of the university’s history while supporting its modern mission of education, patient care and research.
