Dr. Riley is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Director of Diabetes Services. He received his M.D. at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, followed by a pediatric internship and residency at the Albert B Chandler Hospital at the University of Kentucky. He was a fourth year chief resident at the same institution. After a 3 year tour of duty in the US Army in Okinawa, Japan and Fort Knox, Kentucky, he completed a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Florida.
Dr. Riley stayed at the University of Florida until 1993 progressing from assistant professor to full professor. During that time he was part of one of the leading groups in Pediatric diabetes and became recognized as one of the leaders in the immunology of Type 1 diabetes, publishing numerous papers in this area.
Later he moved to the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston as director of the Pediatric Endocrinology and director of the combined adult/pediatric diabetes service. He was appointed to the Texas Diabetes Council during this time and served until he left Texas in 2005.
He then moved to Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Corpus Christi as Vice President of medical education from 1997-2005. Dr Riley served as the residency program director, director of the 3rd year pediatric rotation for medical students from Texas A&M and University of North Texas and associate dean for Texas A&M. In 2005, he became the director of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Akron Children’s hospital. At that institution, he developed the program into the premier pediatric diabetes service in Northeast Ohio caring for over 900 children with type 1 diabetes before returning to Texas, UTMB and his grandchildren in 2010.
