Pediatric Intensive Care Unit:
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) offers critical care services for infants, children and adolescents with severe illnesses or injuries. We can arrange emergent helicopter transport when needed to extend our ability to serve the most seriously ill children in our region.

The expertise of the UTMB faculty includes treatment of severe life-threatening conditions, including:

  • respiratory failure, with use of invasive and non-invasive ventilation techniques
  • septic shock
  • cardiogenic shock and/ or arrhythmias, with a highly collaborative team of pediatric cardiologists
  • oncology-related critical care
  • trauma
  • seizures
  • and post-operative management of complex neurosurgery patients

Together with easily available and collaborative surgical and medical specialty faculty, our intensivists are able to take on these challenging patients knowing they have expert partners in managing patients with these conditions.
