School of Medicine Faculty Accomplishments

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Judith L. Rowen, MD as holder of the Dr. C.W. Daeschner, Jr. ‘45 Professorship in Pediatrics.  Dr. Rowen serves in multiple roles throughout the University.  She is Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics- Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and Director of the Office of Clinical Education.  This endowment, which bears the name of the late Dr. Charles William Daeschner, Jr., one of UTMB’s most respected and loved pediatric physicians who was the first full-time Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, was created with a gift from an anonymous donor in 1999, and established as a professorship by the Department of Pediatrics in 2004.

Dr. Judith L. RowenIn the educational realm, Dr. Rowen is recognized as an innovative medical educator and leader among her peers.  As Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Dr. Rowen is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the clinical clerkships as well as working with her counterpart, Dr. Greg Asimakis, in assuring the integration of basic and clinical science across all four years of the curriculum. Dr. Rowen is a dedicated and excellent teacher with a long track record of mentoring students. She served for ten years as Clerkship Director for Pediatrics and led the change of the clerkship from a four-week inpatient rotation to an eight-week combined ambulatory and inpatient rotation.  She has served on many education-related committees for the School of Medicine, including as Chair of the Electives Committee. She chaired the task force that set new guidelines for medical school electives, thus instituting a new system for course evaluation and tracking which has subsequently been adapted by the Basic Science and Humanities Selective (BSHS) and Ambulatory Community Selective (ACS) committees.  Dr. Rowen’s contributions to medical education have been recognized at the national level.  She is a member of the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics and served as editor of their Journal Club.  Dr. Rowen is an inspirational teacher at all levels as exemplified by her multiple teaching awards.  She received the Golden Rattle Award by the Pediatrics residents for best teacher, a Course Award for Excellence in Lecturing Pathobiology and Host Defense, and the Department of Pediatrics Award for Excellence in Support of Pediatric Education.  She has also been selected multiple times by the medical students for the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) Women in Medicine Award for excellence in teaching, mentoring and the awareness of gender equity, and was recently honored with this award at the 2009 Honors and Awards and The White Coat Ceremony, where she also served as the keynote speaker.  Among her many accolades, Dr. Rowen was the Senior Faculty Marshal at the 2009 School of Medicine Commencement.

Dr. Rowen has played a valuable role within our institution. She provided outstanding assistance in our institutional self-study for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) site visit in December, 2006. The LCME is the accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to the MD degree in U.S. and Canadian medical schools. In addition, she worked arduously in successfully placing our students in rotations throughout the state in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

Dr. Rowen is a well-respected physician-scientist, who has made important contributions in developing effective therapies for neonatal infections.  Her research has also focused on the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and group B streptococcal infections in this same population. Dr. Rowen has contributed to the peer-reviewed literature and has been successful in obtaining support for her research.

Dr. Rowen earned her MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and was an intern, resident, and chief resident in Pediatrics at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.  She subsequently completed a Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship and served as a Research Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Rowen joined the UTMB faculty in 1996.

Dr. Rowen is a highly regarded educator, clinician and investigator within UTMB and across the country. Please join me in congratulating her on this well-deserved honor.

Sincerely,
