Expected Competency
During the Behavioral Developmental Rotation

 

 1.   PATIENT CARE

  • Does the resident demonstrate ability to gather essential and accurate information?
  • Does the resident contribute appropriately to the diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making process?
  • Does the resident demonstrate, even if through discussion not direct patient care, an increased learning about how to counsel patients and families?

 2.   MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE (it’s more than just ‘how smart are you”)

  • Does the resident demonstrate an increased knowledge?
  • Does the resident identify questions and seek answers?
  • Does the resident demonstrate evaluation of medical information?
  • Does the resident demonstrate ability to apply scientific knowledge to patient care?

 3.   INTERPERSONAL SKILLS & COMMUNICATION

  • Does the resident communicate effectively with patients and parents?
  • Does the resident communicate effectively with other professionals?
  • Does the resident work effectively as member of a team?
  • Does the resident communicate effectively by e-mail and/or writing?

 4.   PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING &  IMPROVEMENT

  • Does the resident exhibit any evidence of developing habits for life-long learning?
  • Can the resident analyze his/her own practice experience to recognize strengths, deficiencies and limits?
  • Can the resident use feedback effectively to change performance?
  • Does the resident show evidence of skills of evidence-based decision-making (locating, appraising and assimilating evidence from scientific studies)?
  • Does the resident show skills with information technology?

5.   SYSTEMS-BASED PRACTICE

  • Does the resident demonstrate knowledge of types of the many systems involved in interventions for children with behavioral-developmental disorders (e.g. primary care, specialty care, ER, hospitals, schools, therapists, community agencies)?
  • Does the resident show awareness of issues which affect cost-effective health care?
  • Does the resident suggest ways to advocate for quality patient care and assisting patients with health care systems?
  • Does the resident suggest strategies which might improve coordination of care?

6.  PROFESSIONALISM

Does the resident demonstrate

  • respect for & responsiveness to needs of patients by

  • integrity, honesty, compassion, empathy

  • respect for privacy and autonomy

  • accountability and commitment

  • responsiveness to needs of patients & society

  • sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ and colleagues’ gender, age, culture, disabilities, ethnicity and sexual orientation
