Pairing with a Pediatrician

During the Health & Development Rotation, you will have the opportunity to spend a half-day with two pediatricians. You will not be seeing patients independently and "checking out" to the provider.  Instead, this is your time to learn something about this pediatrician's style and about the practice of pediatrics.

You should get your assignments,  with address and phone numbers, on the first day of the rotation. On the day of the pairing, should there be any reason why you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to contact the physician and Dr. Niebuhr.

PAIRING REFLECTION (one per Pairing)

Submit Reflections (one per pairing) to Dr. Niebuhr vniebuhr@utmb.edu

Your entries will be reviewed for evidence of observational skills and insight.

Note: the final pairing may be on the last day of the rotation.  Please submit the Pairing Reflection within two days.

  1. Case report
Report on one case (hopefully a well-child visit) from which you learned something.  You needn't submit the entire EPIC note.  Instead, write a brief summary of the case and your reflections.

  2. Questions parents ask.
For one case,  take with you a notebook or clipboard and write down verbatim the questions the parents ask (i.e. don't just try to recall these after the fact).   Submit these.  Could you have answered their questions?

  3. Developmental Assessment and Teaching

    a.  What can you identify about this pediatrician's style when teaching parents about health and development?

    b.   What does this pediatrician think are the most important points to emphasize with parents?

    c.   In this practice,  what is the role of the nursing staff in assessing health & development and/or providing counseling on health promotion and developmental promotion.
