Health & Development Objectives based on
the ACGME-required Competencies

1.   PATIENT CARE.    Through written and verbal responses, the resident will demonstrate the following patient care skills:

  • developmental assessment in areas of language, cognition, motor skills, social-emotional skills
  • counseling a parent on behavior change  (e.g. how the parent will do something differently to promote better health or development)
  • anticipatory guidance (informing a caregiver about the upcoming developmental tasks)

2.   MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE.   Through written and verbal responses, the resident will demonstrate increased knowledge of the following:

  • expected behaviors at various ages  (6 age modules)

  • factors which compromise health and normal development

  • interventions known to be effective to enhance development and health

  • specific information included in the topic modules
     

3.   INTERPERSONAL SKILLS & COMMUNICATION
The resident will demonstrate effective written, verbal, and e-mail communication with faculty.

4.   PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING & IMPROVEMENT
The resident will demonstrate practice-based learning and improvement in the following ways:

  • completing all the modules.

  • analyzing his/her own practices (in Continuity Practice) to determine what changes might be made to better facilitate healthy development

  • accepting feedback from faculty and showing an effort to incorporate feedback into practice

  • demonstrating skills at identifying appropriate resources to answer questions about health and development
     

5.  PROFESSIONALISM.   The resident will demonstrate professionalism by

  • communicating with faculty
  • meeting the rotation requirements  (accountability and commitment)
  • demonstrating awareness of patient privacy
  • demonstrating sensitivity and responsiveness to patient and colleagues’ gender, age, culture, disabilities, ethnicity and sexual orientation

6.   SYSTEMS-BASED PRACTICE.  The resident will demonstrate  increased awareness of the following:

  • Management of well-child visits in various types of medical practices
  • Issues of access to care and insurance (public and private) coverage of health maintenance care
  • Community resources to assist families in raising healthy children
  • Advocacy for health promotion and disease prevention
