Studies show that the precursors of atherosclerosis begin in childhood. Thus, it is important for pediatricians to recognize, screen for, and treat dyslipidemia in childhood

This module is intended to provide pediatricians an overview for identifying and clinically managing the overweight or obese child or adolescent. Specific emphasis is placed on recognizing, screening, and treating dyslipidemia. A review is provided of the most recent guidelines for lipid screening and cardiovascular health in children from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome will be also reviewed, as these conditions put patients at an increased risk for dyslipidemia beginning even in childhood or adolescence.
