DEFINITIONS

Body Mass Index (BMI):

  • is a measure of body weight adjusted for height and is an indirect measure of body fat
  • is calculated by the following formula:
  • BMI = body weight (in kg)/ height (in m)2

Dyslipidemia may be due to any of the following (De Ferranti, 2009):

  • Triglyceride concentrations of > 150 mg/dL
  • HDL concentrations of < 35 mg/dL
  • Total cholesterol > 200 mg/dL
  • LDL level > 130 mg/dL

Overweight:

  • BMI >85th% and <95 th% for age and gender (in children >2 years of age)
  • Weight-for-height >95 th% for age and gender (in children <2 years of age)

Obesity:

  • BMI >95 th% for age and gender (in children > 2 years of age)
