MODULE 4: Community Agencies

Instructions:
1. We suggest you answer these questions in Word , then cut and paste into an e-mail.

1. AHECObjectives: Describe what is AHEC and why would a community physician want to know about AHEC. Discover the AHEC activities in this community.
Activity: Spend one with an AHEC staff member from the region serving the pediatric practice in which you are completing the PediACS.
Submission: Describe your time with AHEC. What did you learn about AHEC? With what activities is AHEC involved in this community?
2. WICObjectives: Describe what is WIC and why is it important for community pediatrician to know about WIC?
Activity: You may want to visit a WIC office, not just read about WIC off the Internet.
Submission: What is WIC? How is it funded? For what services would you send patients to WIC? If you visited a WIC office , describe your visit and what you learned.
3. One other child/youth/family-serving agencyObjective: learn about one other child/youth/family-serving agency or organization
Activity: Choose one other child/youth/family-serving agency or organization that you would like to learn more about.
Suggestion: ask your preceptor if there is any agency or organization that the preceptor would like to learn more about; and set out to learn about the agency in the way as to be helpful to the preceptor.
For example, the preceptor may want to
learn about the type of services provided by the new mental health provider in town
know about the local Head Start – what ages, what hours, do they still have openings, eligibility?
learn about the after-school program starting up at a local church
identify what are the advantages for his families of children with ADHD for joining CHADD, or families with autism for joining Autism Society of America
what services does the county MHMR have for his patients with autism or mental retardation

What is the mission of the agency/organization?
Is this a local, state, or federal program?
What services are provided?
What are the eligibility requirements (who can benefit?)
How is this agency/organization funded?
Is this an organization that your preceptor knows of, or are you teaching the preceptor?
Any reflections? (e.g. the agency's needs? impact? potential role of a pediatrician?)
