A message from the Program Director

The Department of Pediatrics at UTMB in Galveston has a proud tradition of excellence in residency education since the 1940’s - well over 50 years.  I am pleased to be a part of that tradition, and I welcome you to consider joining us!

A major strength of our program is the commitment of our faculty to clinical excellence, to teaching the art and science of pediatric care, and to helping residents prepare for careers in pediatrics, regardless of whether they want to practice primary care or enter a subspecialty fellowship program.

Our residents learn in inpatient and outpatient settings, campus-based and community-based settings, on the island and on the ‘mainland.’  The education program is based on a sound objectives-based curriculum plan – that is, a solid roadmap to get you where you want and need to be going.

Our educational leadership team meets weekly to review that roadmap and ensure that it meets the needs of residents. In the past year, we have implemented additional community-based experiences, added focus to our career development curriculum, re-organized our teaching conference series, and strengthened our board review activities, evidence-based pediatrics curriculum, and research curriculum.

I am particularly proud of the camaraderie and caring among our residents - bolstered by an annual retreat, monthly resident meetings, an occasional party, and a true sense of teamwork and group problem-solving.

I invite you to read more about our program in the Program Overview; and please do not hesitate to contact me with questions.
