Biography

Dr. Billy U. Philips, Jr. is a tenured Professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He teaches in the medical school and regularly interacts with graduate and medical students and resident physicians about issues in epidemiology and cancer prevention and control. His research focuses on cancer prevention and control but he is well known for his contributions to other aspects of public health including smoking control, physician and health professions education, and nutritional issues in cancer. He has been instrumental in re-establishing the Commit to Quit smoking cessation program at UTMB.  Dr. Philips established the Cancer Nutrition Network for Texans based on his personal experience with his father’s nutrition needs while battling cancer. Dr. Philips is Chairman of the Cancer Control Coalition for Texas, Past-Vice Chairman and a member of the steering committee of the TMA’s Physician Oncology Education Program.  He has been honored for his efforts in cancer prevention and control by the Texas Legislature with the Gib Lewis award for Excellence in Cancer Education in Texas. Dr. Philips is a prolific writer and author of books, journal articles in the peer-reviewed literature, instructional materials, and the like. He is the PI and Chairman of the CATCHUM Project, an NCI funded consortium of eight Texas Medical Schools focused on undergraduate medical education in cancer prevention.
