Biography:
Kyriakos S.
Markides received his PhD in sociology from Louisiana
State University in 1976. He
is currently the Annie and John Gnitzinger Professor of Aging and Director
of the Division of Sociomedical Sciences at the University of
Texas Medical Branch in
Galveston in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health.
He has been conducting research on the health of older Mexican Americans
since 1976. He is currently Principal Investigator of the Hispanic
Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly (EPESE)
a longitudinal study of 3,050 older Mexican Americans from the
Southwestern United States. Dr. Markides is the author or co-author of over 210 publications, the
majority of which are on older Mexican Americans. He is also the founding
and current editor of the Journal of Aging and Health. The Institute for
Scientific Information has recently selected Dr. Markides to be listed
among the most cited social scientists in the world.
