Students accepted to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
from undergraduate school to pursue doctoral
training are provided with a base stipend from state
appropriations for one year. The students are
responsible for tuition and fees, but almost all students
qualify for in-state tuition because they are appointed as
half-time classified employees. At the end of that period,
students will choose the Graduate Program in the Department of
Preventive Medicine and Community Health (PMCH) in the
curriculum of Space Life Sciences. In general, students should
have a faculty mentor identified with whom they will work with
the remainder of their training. Ideally, the faculty member’s
research funding will support any student stipend. If students
enter the PMCH program directly with a master’s or other
advanced degree, optimally, they will be supported from
the beginning by the faculty mentor’s research funding.
However, a number of barriers exist with regard to supporting
international students from various grant sources and some
students may be required to seek other external or self
funding. In the cases of external or self-funding, close
attention will be paid to locating faculty mentors with
sufficient commitment and time.
