Program Goals and Objectives
General Goals of the program:
-
To train the residents to acquire competencies in general
preventive medicine and public health, as described by ACPM, by providing
them the knowledge in the core areas of preventive medicine including
epidemiology, biostatistics, health care administration, environmental
health, and behavioral sciences and the relevant practical experiences.

To provide the residents experience in application of
knowledge and skills in population health need assessment and program
development and evaluation.

To develop the ability of the resident to conduct independent
research in the field of preventive medicine and public health
-
To prepare the residents as an effective public health
educators with individual patients and communities.
-
To prepare physicians for leadership roles in academia,
government, corporations, and other relevant settings.
-
To qualify residents to be eligible to sit for certification
examination of American Board of preventive medicine (General Preventive
Medicine & Public Health).
Specific objectives of the program:
1.
Manage Institutional Issues such as:
-
Determine staffing needs for a correctional or preventive
medicine program, develop position descriptions, and prepare, present and
defend an operational budget for that program,
-
prepare technical instructions necessary to guide other
public health workers or health care professionals in instituting the
prevention or control of public health problems,
-
discuss the planning, implementation, operation, and
evaluation of programs of industrial hygiene, radiation safety, consumer
health protection, occupational safety, solid waste management, water
treatment and general sanitation in food handling,
-
understand common and unique intimate medical, surgical, and
obstetrical/gynecological disorders with special emphasis on most commonly
referred disorders to secondary and tertiary care centers,
2. Apply
Epidemiological/Population Principles such as:
-
discuss the principles, methods, and value of an accurate
vital records system,
-
describe the elements of a chronic disease program necessary
for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention,
-
design a case registry for any disease or condition of public
health importance,
-
plan, conduct, and report the results of a epidemiologic
investigation of a non-infectious disease or a condition of abnormal
incidence or prevalence in a population,
-
discuss maternal and child health problems in a population,
with consideration to problems in nutrition, development, and wellness,
-
provide medical consultation to physicians and other public
health professionals in preventing and controlling the spread of
communicable diseases, including major zoo noses transmissible to humans and
institutional infections,
-
conduct epidemiological investigations of communicable
diseases, including the preparation of a report of the investigation and
recommendations for appropriate disease prevention and control measures,
-
select appropriately and apply standard biostatiscal measures
of variation, including use of normal, Student’s t, chi-square, poison, and
binomial distributions in comparing disease patterns among reference
populations and study groups,

describe state and federal requirements of reporting cases of
disease, their management, and the system of disease surveillance,
-
discuss the systems for surveillance and control of
vaccine-preventable and other communicable diseases and for other diseases
and conditions of public health interest,
-
design, perform, and evaluate clinical trials,
-
use electronic data processing services in support of a
public health program and demonstrate the use of epidemiological tools in
administration and decision making,
3. Apply Community Interaction and Health Education
Techniques such as:
-
counsel adults and adolescents in lifestyle modification,
-
describe how in a give locality, core public health functions
are provided,
-
assess health risk factors in individual persons and groups
and prescribe appropriate interventions,
-
describe the legal responsibilities of health authorities and
of private physicians; explain how these responsibilities may practically be
accomplished,
-
demonstrate the ability to prepare and use effective public
health education materials and information for health professionals with
appropriate target populations,
-
prepare and make an effective oral presentation of technical
material, making use of the full variety of appropriate training aids.
