Requirements for Preventive 
Medicine Residencies

                                                                   Program Requirements:
                                                                  (Combined applicants- please see combined Internal Medicine/Preventive Medicine below)
 
  • Entering residents must have completed at least one year of U.S. medical training in an ACGME-accredited clinical residency with a minimum of 6 months of direct patient care
  • Must have completed Steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE or COMLEX (if D.O.)
  • Complete application and submit required documents (must be either post-marked by or received in our office by October 31st)
  • Current ECFMG certification is required for all international graduates
  • If you are an international graduate, only J1 and H1-B visas will be accepted / sponsored*
  • Must not have been away from clinical medicine longer than 2 years
  • Must meet all admission requirements for UTMB's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

* Applicants for the Aerospace Medicine Residency must be U.S. Citizens.  This residency is U.S. government funded.

 Combined Internal Medicine/Preventive Medicine Program Requirements:
(Applicants must apply to both programs separately)

Internal Medicine-

  • All applications are processed through ERAS- no paper applications will be accepted
  • Current ECFMG certification is required for all international graduates
  • If you are an international graduate, only J1 and H1-B visas will be sponsored (does not apply to the combined Internal Medicine/Aerospace Medicine Residency)
  • Must not have been away from clinical medicine longer than 2 years
  • A minimum score of 90 is required on the USMLE Part 2
  • No U.S. clinical experience is required at this time

Preventive Medicine-

  • Application must be submitted either online or mailed along with the required documents directly to the program by the required deadline **
  • Current ECFMG certification is required for all international graduates
  • If you are an international graduate, only J1 and H1-B visas will be sponsored (applies only to the combined Internal Medicine/General Preventive Medicine and Internal Medicine/Occupational Medicine Residencies)
  • Must not have been away from clinical medicine longer than 2 years
  • A minimum score of 90 is required on the USMLE Part 2
  • No U.S. clinical experience is required at this time
  • Must meet all admission requirements for UTMB's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

** Not part of the ERAS/NRMP application system
