2. Review Base Unit: q Charges battery q Downloads glucose results…to EPIC! J q Uploads data q Components: q Two Cords attached ~to it (power cable and “network” cable) q Black connector inside base- avoid spilling of liquids q Green indicator light- indicates meter is charging. Light should come on upon placing meter in base. If it does not, check power cords are plugged in or try re-docking meter.
3. Review Accessory Box & Reagents q Test strip vials must be capped at all times and stored at room temperature to protect from humidity q Good until manufacturer expiration date q Controls expiration date after opening is 3 months or manuf exp date whichever comes first. q The new discard date must be written on each control vial.
4. Review Code Key: q Change with each vial of strips q Code number on key must match the code on test strip vial.

5. Demonstrate Running Controls: q Turn meter on q Enter Operator ID - Required q Select "Control Test" q Select "Level 1" or “required” level q Verify control lot (Yes/No) q Verify strip lot (Yes/No) q Insert strip q Apply solution to edge – look to see that yellow window is completely filled - 15 seconds to dose again q Result appears as PASS/FAIL in 26 seconds q 2 Levels must be run every 24 HR or when incorrect results are suspected q Enter required comment code –Repeated Test for “out of range” results
6. Demonstrate Patient Test: q Turn meter on & enter Operator ID – q Select "Patient Test" q Scan Patient ID on armband or invision label (must use the 11 digits financial number) q Hold meter still and at least 3 in away from barcode. Wait for meter response. q Verify strip lot/ code (Yes / No) and Insert strip as indicated. q Apply blood to edge of strip–yellow window must be completely filled - 15 seconds to re-dose.
7. Critical and Out of range results: q For result flagged as critical ("comments" box blinks): q Enter the required Comment code “Notified Provider” q For result flagged as “Out of Range” (out of “normal” range): q No comment is required

8. Docking meter in its base: q Meter must be turned OFF prior to placing it in its base. q The base serves at least 2 functions: q Ensures transmission of results to medical record. q Ensures meter is charging properly q Failure to turn meter OFF may cause meter to malfunction or reset on its own. q When meter is placed in base, it will go into TRANSMITTING mode—DO NOT remove meter from base until meter goes into IDLE.
9. Storage and proper care of the meter: q Avoid getting liquid (i.e. cleaning agent or control solution) into the Accu-chek Inform meter test strip insertion slot, the base unit’s meter insertion point, and power button q Meter must not be subjected to sources of heat (UV Bili lights, isolettes, bed warmers) for more than 10 seconds. q Wipe meter surfaces using either 10% bleach or isopropyl alcohol pads. Cavicide is not an approved disinfecting agent.
10. Review General Information: q Battery charge lasts 5-7 days @ 30 tests/day q Full charge - dock 3 hours; 90% charge - dock 1 hour; 10 tests – dock 15 minutes q Low Battery message - 10 more tests q Critical Battery message - no more tests
