| Eligibility |
Graduate
students in the laboratory of any Center for Tropical Diseases
member or Training Grant faculty participant are eligible.
Nominees need not be in the Pathology Department or Experimental
Pathology Graduate Program.
Trainees must be permanent residents, non-citizens
national or U.S. citizens, and have been enrolled in the
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences for a minimum of one
year. |
| Funds |
The
training grant has funds to support three trainees for academic
years 1997-98 and 1998-99, and four trainees for 1999-2000,
2000-01 and 2001-02. |
| Announcement
of Applications |
Announcement
of applications for the training grant positions will be made in
April each year. |
| Applications |
The
following materials are due by June 23 for all trainee nominations:

A
current CV for the student.
-
Undergraduate
transcripts and GRE scores.
-
A
UTMB Graduate School transcript.
-
A
letter of nomination from the faculty mentor.
A
description of the research project, to be written by the
student nominee. The
format should be an abbreviated, 2 page form of the standard NIH
R01 application, including specific aims, significance and
background information, preliminary studies, and research design
and methods sections. Special attention should be paid to a
discussion of relevance to emerging and/or tropical disease.
Applicants for continued funding should also report progress
made during the year. Preliminary data and references can be
reported on additional pages. A minimum font size of 11 pt and
margins of at least 0.5 in are required. |
| Selection
of Trainees |
Selection
of trainees will be made by the Admissions and Recruitment
Committee in May-June each year for the following academic
year.
Applications
will be evaluated using an NIH-style of 1-5 for each of the
following criteria:

Academic
credentials of the applicant (grades, GRE scores etc.)
-
Demonstration
of a aptitude for research (past research experience,
publications and abstracts, etc.)
-
Quality
of the research proposal
-
Relevance
of the proposed research to emerging and/or tropical
infectious diseases.

| Length
of Fellowship |
Each
pre-doctoral fellowship will be for a period of one year.
Trainees can apply for an additional year of support from the
training grant but for a maximum total of two years support from
this grant. |
| Mentor |
Each
trainee must have a mentor who is on the program or adjunct
faculty of the Training Grant. |
| Stipends |
The
stipend is $21,840 for 2002-2003. Accordingly, mentors will
be responsible for supplementing stipends at least to that paid
to other students in the student's graduate program. Trainees'
tuition will be paid by the training grant but only while they
are being supported by the training grant. Each trainee will be
eligible for $1,500 for supplies or other uses to support their
studies. Applications for supplies monies must be made to the
Program Director and include a proposed budget for how the funds
will be spent. |
| Travel
Funds |
Each
trainee can receive a maximum of $600 per year towards attending
national meetings to present papers (oral or poster) or to
participate in field studies abroad. Trainees must apply in
writing to the Program Director for travel funds, must receive
written approval from the Program Director and within one month
of completing the trip must provide a report of how the money
was spent and the benefit gained. |
| Graduate
Courses |
Each
trainee will discuss enrollment in graduate courses prior to
signing up for courses in their respective graduate program. All
trainees are expected to participate each semester in the
graduate course "PATH 6245: Colloquium of Frontiers in
Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine". At the end of
each semester, each trainee shall inform the Program Director in
writing of their grades for graduate school courses taken during
that semester. Each trainee will present one seminar per year as part of the
graduate course PATH 6245: Colloquium of Frontiers in Infectious
Diseases and Tropical Medicine.
Each trainee will provide the Program Director with an
interim report of research activities on January 15, each year
for inclusion in the renewal to the NIH. |
| Publications
and Presentations |
All
publications or presentations at meetings resulting from
research performed in full or in part while the trainee was
supported by the training grant will acknowledge support of
grant T32 AI 075261. A copy of each publication or meeting
abstract will be provided to the Program Director. |
| Graduate
Programs |
All
trainees must be enrolled as Ph.D.-seeking students in one of
the graduate programs within the
Graduate School of Biomedical
Sciences (GSBS) at UTMB. Ph.D. degrees are awarded by the GSBS
via graduate programs NOT the training grant. Each graduate
program is unique in its requirements of core and elective
courses. Any discrepancies between requirements of a Graduate
Program and the Training Grant should be resolved by a meeting
of the trainee, mentor, graduate program Director and Training
Grant Director. |

Participation
of students and fellows in scientific meetings and societies are important
components in developing the careers of young scientists. The following
are some of the societies who offer special, reduced priced, membership to
students and/or fellows. Each offers subscriptions to journals at reduced
rates, advertisements for jobs, annual meetings, travel awards, and awards
for presentations at meetings.

USE
OF ANIMALS, RADIOISOTOPES AND BIOLOGICAL AGENTS
All
pre-doctoral trainees or medical students supported by this training grant
may only use animals, radioisotopes and/or biological agents if they are
included as authorized users on appropriate protocols of the academic
mentor. Training grant support will be terminated if trainees or medical
students are found to be unauthorized users of animals, radioisotopes
and/or biological agents.
Trainees
or medical students must receive appropriate vaccination prior to working
with biological agents that have protocols which require vaccination.
