Pre-doctoral Training in Emerging and Tropical Infectious Diseases

 

Medical Students

Funds   Rules

 

The training program will support a maximum of three medical students annually during one of the following periods of their medical school training:

 

  • Two month research program for medical students at the end of year one, or

  • Elective in the fourth year.

 


Short-term Positions

Short-term positions should be on a full-time basis and longer than two months but may not last longer than three months.

Overseas Training

Students must undertake infectious disease research training overseas under the mentorship of one of the program faculty.

Project type

The research training can be either in a UTMB project or in an appropriate project that can be arranged with help from UTMB faculty.

Design of Research

The student will design the research with the assistance of a faculty member, travel overseas to a developing country, and carry out the research under the mentorship of a scientist on-site.

Aim of Program

The aim of this part of the training program is to provide medical students with opportunities to participate in infectious disease research and attract medical students into research careers in basic or clinical infectious diseases.

Thus, special efforts will be made to stimulate those students who participate in this training program early in their medical school curriculum to return to infectious disease research as an elective in the fourth year of medical school.

 


Funds

Funds are available to support travel, vaccinations, medications and accommodations (up to $2000 per student per year). The amount of “travel funds” for each student will be decided by the Program Director as costs vary between countries.  In addition, there is a stipend ($2,510 for two months per year per student fro 2001 and $2750 for 2002) which is intended to cover costs of living expenses. Applications will be announced in January of each year for funding during the calendar year. The deadline for applications is February 25, 2000. If necessary, applicants will be interviewed during March and successful applicants will be notified by March 31.

Rules

  • Students are responsible for contacting potential mentors overseas.

  • Overseas mentors must provide written evidence of acceptance of the student, including dates of availability, any requirements of the student and any costs associated with the training.

  • Research in developed countries is not eligible for support.

  • Costs in excess of the travel funds and stipend (i.e. $4510 for 2001) must be paid by the student.

  • No clinical clerkships.

  • Report of research required within one month of completion of the training.

  • Appropriate vaccinations and medications are the responsibility of the student prior to departure. Costs will be paid by above travel funds.
