Message from the President:
Betsy Clardy named chief development officer at UTMB
Dear Members of the University Community,
It is my pleasure to announce that after a long and thorough search that included a host of excellent candidates, Betsy Clardy has been named associate vice president and chief development officer for UTMB.
Betsy
will lead development efforts to secure philanthropic funding to
support UTMB’s priority research, education and patient care
initiatives including a new $250 million dollar medical tower and a
$90 million research facility on the UTMB campus.
She will report directly to me when she begins her duties in August, and will lead the Office of Development, formerly under the University Advancement umbrella along with the Office of Public Affairs. Those are now free-standing entities within the President's Office, charged with continuing to work together and with other campus departments to support and advance institutional priorities. (Chris Comer leads Public Affairs.)
I feel extremely fortunate to have Betsy join the university in this role. Her leadership is critically important as we face the challenges of building major new facilities, establishing specialty medical services and securing additional scholarships and financial support for our students.
I also wanted to take a moment to thank Dr. Barbara Breier, assistant vice president for strategic initiatives, for serving as the interim leader of the development team since last September. Barbara took on this role in addition to her existing responsibilities, and did an excellent job at both.
Betsy will be coming to UTMB from Texas Lutheran University, her alma mater, where she served as vice president for resource development raising $52.4 million in its comprehensive campaign which was completed in 2007.
Previously she served as director of development for principal gifts at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She was a part of that institution’s $151 million capital campaign and served as co-editor of “The Quarterly Guide to Private Funding.”
Betsy graduated with a bachelor’s degree in government and pre-law from TLU. She was with the Margaret A. Shannon Estate in San Angelo where she worked with the Board of Trustees of the Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She’s been a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and has served on the development advisory committee of the San Antonio Area Foundation, the Board of Directors of the Bexar County Arts and Culture Fund and the Board of the Mid-Texas Symphony. She is a sustainer member of the San Antonio Junior League, and is author of “Making the Most of Your Special Event.”
Betsy and her husband, Bert, have four adult children and three granddaughters, and are looking forward to becoming part of our UTMB community. Please join me in welcoming them.
Sincerely,
David L. Callender, MD, MBA
UTMB President
